Genesis 46:12 names him as a son of Parets, which makes him both a grandson and a great-grandson of Yehudah (cf Numbers 26:21 and 1 Chronicles 2:5), Parets and his twin-brother Zerach having been fathered by Yehudah incestuously on his daughter-in-law Tamar.
Literally "he who has experienced mercy".
