Keran

כרן

Genesis 36:26: a son of Dishon, in the genealogy of Esav; a descendant of Se'ir the Chori/Chivi.

Gesenius claims that it comes from the same root as Kinnor (כנור) = "a harp", which seems peculiar, given that one is spelled Kaf-Nun-Reysh and the other Kaf-Reysh-Nun. Much more likely, since no other Yehudit words grow on this root, it is an error for Cheran (חרן) or Charan (Haran), which would link it to the moon-city of Padan Aram, and also to Choronayim (חרניים), meaning "two caverns" – i.e. a double cave in the same manner as Machpelah - a town in the hill-country of Mo-Av. This connection is made primarily because the descendants of Se'ir who inhabited the hill-country of Mo-Av called them Chori (חרי) or Chorites (Horites), a word that came to mean "free-born" or "nobles" in later Yisra-El - see also the notes to Chirah.
