15:1 VA YEDABER YHVH EL MOSHEH VE EL AHARON LEMOR

וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל אַהֲרֹן לֵאמֹר

דַּבְּרוּ אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַאֲמַרְתֶּם אֲלֵהֶם אִישׁ אִישׁ כִּי יִהְיֶה זָב מִבְּשָׂרוֹ זוֹבוֹ טָמֵא הוּא

KJ: Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When any man hath a running issue out of his flesh, because of his issue he is unclean.

BN: Speak to the children of Yisra-El, and say to them: "When any man has a running discharge in his flesh, that discharge is unclean...


15:3 VE ZOT TIHEYEH TUM'ATO BE ZOVO RAR BESARO ET ZOVO O HECHTIM BESARO MI ZOVO TUM'ATO HI

וְזֹאת תִּהְיֶה טֻמְאָתוֹ בְּזוֹבוֹ רָר בְּשָׂרוֹ אֶת זוֹבוֹ אוֹ הֶחְתִּים בְּשָׂרוֹ מִזּוֹבוֹ טֻמְאָתוֹ הִוא

KJ: And this shall be his uncleanness in his issue: whether his flesh run with his issue, or his flesh be stopped from his issue, it is his uncleanness.

BN: And this is how you shall determine his uncleanness with regards his discharge: if his flesh runs with his discharge, if or his flesh is obstructed by this discharge, this is his uncleanness.


All translators struggle with this verse: how does a discharge "stop" the flesh, or "obstruct" it, and from what? Some gruesomely grotesque attempts to explain the medics of this can be found here.

Part of the difficulty lies in the ambivalence of "uncleanness". The discharge is itself a form of medical "uncleanness", but there is also the ritual or ceremonial "uncleanness", the one that prohibits you from entering the Sanctuary,and for that any mere blemish could suffice.


15:4 KOL HA MISHKAV ASHER YISHKAV ALAV HA ZAV YITMA VE CHOL HA KELI ASHER YESHEV ALAV YITMA

כָּל הַמִּשְׁכָּב אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכַּב עָלָיו הַזָּב יִטְמָא וְכָל הַכְּלִי אֲשֶׁר יֵשֵׁב עָלָיו יִטְמָא

KJ: Every bed, whereon he lieth that hath the issue, is unclean: and every thing, whereon he sitteth, shall be unclean.

BN: Any bed on which he who has the issue has lain shall be considered unclean; and every thing on which he has sat shall be considered unclean.


15:5 VE ISH ASHER YIGA BE MISHKAVO YECHABES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר יִגַּע בְּמִשְׁכָּבוֹ יְכַבֵּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And whosoever toucheth his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And anyone who touches his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:6 VE HA YOSHEV AL HA KELI ASHER YESHEV ALAV HA ZAV YECHABES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְהַיֹּשֵׁב עַל הַכְּלִי אֲשֶׁר יֵשֵׁב עָלָיו הַזָּב יְכַבֵּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And he that sitteth on any thing whereon he sat that hath the issue shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And he who sits on any thing on which he who has the issue has sat shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:7 VE HA NOG'E'A BI VESAR HA ZAV YECHABES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְהַנֹּגֵעַ בִּבְשַׂר הַזָּב יְכַבֵּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And he that toucheth the flesh of him that hath the issue shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And he who touches the flesh of the one who has the issue shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:8 VE CHI YAROK HA ZAV BA TAHOR VE CHIBES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְכִי יָרֹק הַזָּב בַּטָּהוֹר וְכִבֶּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And if he that hath the issue spit upon him that is clean; then he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And if he who has the issue should spit upon he who is clean, then he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


Not necessarily a wilful and nasty piece of social misbehaviour, but also perhaps the spittle that people in the front row of the theatre are well used to.


15:9 VE CHOL HA MERKAV ASHER YIRKAV ALAV HA ZAV YITMA

וְכָל הַמֶּרְכָּב אֲשֶׁר יִרְכַּב עָלָיו הַזָּב יִטְמָא

KJ: And what saddle soever he rideth upon that hath the issue shall be unclean.

BN: And any saddle that he who has the issue rides upon shall be considered unclean.


15:10 VE CHOL HA NOG'E'A BE CHOL ASHER YIHEYEH TACHTAV YITMA AD HA AREV VE HA NOS'E OTAM YECHABES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְכָל הַנֹּגֵעַ בְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה תַחְתָּיו יִטְמָא עַד הָעָרֶב וְהַנּוֹשֵׂא אוֹתָם יְכַבֵּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And whosoever toucheth any thing that was under him shall be unclean until the even: and he that beareth any of those things shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And whoever touches any thing that was under him shall be considered unclean until the evening; and he who carries those things shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:11 VE CHOL ASHER YIGA BO HA ZAV VE YADAV LO SHATAPH BA MAYIM VE CHIBES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר יִגַּע בּוֹ הַזָּב וְיָדָיו לֹא שָׁטַף בַּמָּיִם וְכִבֶּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And whomsoever he toucheth that hath the issue, and hath not rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And whoever he who has the issue touches, without having rinsed his hands in water, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:12 U CHELI CHERES ASHER YIGA BO HA ZAV YISHAVER VE CHOL KELI ETS YISHATEPH BA MAYIM

וּכְלִי חֶרֶשׂ אֲשֶׁר יִגַּע בּוֹ הַזָּב יִשָּׁבֵר וְכָל כְּלִי עֵץ יִשָּׁטֵף בַּמָּיִם

KJ: And the vessel of earth, that he toucheth which hath the issue, shall be broken: and every vessel of wood shall be rinsed in water.

BN: And the earthen vessel, which he who has the issue touches, shall be broken; and every wooden vessel shall be rinsed in water.


15:13 VE CHI YIT'HAR HA ZAV MI ZOVO VE SAPHAR LO SHIV'AT YAMIM LE TAHARATO VE CHIBES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BESARO BA MAYIM CHAYIM VE TAHER

וְכִי יִטְהַר הַזָּב מִזּוֹבוֹ וְסָפַר לוֹ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים לְטָהֳרָתוֹ וְכִבֶּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בְּשָׂרוֹ בְּמַיִם חַיִּים וְטָהֵר

KJ: And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.

BN: And when he who has an issue is cleansed of his issue, then he shall count seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes; and he shall bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be considered clean.


MAYIM CHAYIM: A distinction is made between washing, for the purposes of hygiene, and washing for the purposes of spiritual purification; the latter implies a MIKVEH, for the former any water will do (provided that it is clean).

Seven days: always the seven, because this is YHVH's sacred number.


15:14 U VA YOM HA SHEMIYNI YIKACH LO SHETEY TORIM O SHENEY BENEY YONAH U VA LIPHNEY YHVH EL PETACH OHEL MO'ED U NETANAM EL HA KOHEN

וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי יִקַּח לוֹ שְׁתֵּי תֹרִים אוֹ שְׁנֵי בְּנֵי יוֹנָה וּבָא לִפְנֵי יְהוָה אֶל פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וּנְתָנָם אֶל הַכֹּהֵן

KJ: And on the eighth day he shall take to him two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, and come before the LORD unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and give them unto the priest:

BN: And on the eighth day he shall take two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, and come before YHVH at the door of the tent of meeting, and give them to the Kohen.


Again we witness the superstition that sickness is allied to sin and can only finally be healed through sacrifice. For a monotheistic religion that is opposed to superstition, the choice of birds of Astarte may be surprising; it is obviously left over from pre-monotheistic times (or perhaps gives us one more piece of evidence that monotheism did not actually enter Judaism until after the end of the epoch of the Bible!).


15:15 VE ASAH OTAM HA KOHEN ECHAD CHATA'T VE HA ECHAD OLAH VE CHIPER ALAV HA KOHEN LIPHNEY YHVH MI ZOVO

וְעָשָׂה אֹתָם הַכֹּהֵן אֶחָד חַטָּאת וְהָאֶחָד עֹלָה וְכִפֶּר עָלָיו הַכֹּהֵן לִפְנֵי יְהוָה מִזּוֹבוֹ

KJ: And the priest shall offer them, the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD for his issue.

BN: And the Kohen shall offer them, the one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering; and the Kohen shall make atonement for him before YHVH for his issue.

15:16 VE ISH KI TETS'E MIMENU SHICHVAT ZARA VE RACHATS BA MAYIM ET KOL BESARO VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְאִישׁ כִּי תֵצֵא מִמֶּנּוּ שִׁכְבַת זָרַע וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם אֶת כָּל בְּשָׂרוֹ וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And if any man's seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And if the flow of seed should issue from a man, then he shall bathe all his flesh in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


Is this an unintentional flow of seed, or the act of coitus interrupts - the sin of Onan - or masturbation? The text is not clear, and therefore any or all are presumably counted. What does Rashi say? Nothing.


15:17 VE CHOL BEGED VE CHOL OR ASHER YIHEYEH ALAV SHICHVAT ZARA VE CHUBAS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְכָל בֶּגֶד וְכָל עוֹר אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה עָלָיו שִׁכְבַת זָרַע וְכֻבַּס בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And every cloth garment, and every piece of leather, on which is the flow of seed, shall be washed with water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:18 VE ISHAH ASHER YISHKAV ISH OTAH SHICHVAT ZARA VE RACHATSU VA MAYIM VE TAM'U AD HA AREV

וְאִשָּׁה אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכַּב אִישׁ אֹתָהּ שִׁכְבַת זָרַע וְרָחֲצוּ בַמַּיִם וְטָמְאוּ עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: The woman also with whom man shall lie with seed of copulation, they shall both bathe themselves in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And the woman with whom a man shall lie carnally, they shall both bathe themselves in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


Blood and semen. Two of the three sources of life (the third, the egg, is dealt with in the laws regarding menstruation and female purification, below and in chapter 12) and therefore two of the holiest elements of creation; and therefore two of the easiest to sin, even unintentionally.

15:19 VE ISHAH KI TIHEYEH ZAVAH DAM YIHEYEH ZOVAH BI VESARAH SHIV'AT YAMIM TIHEYEH VE NIDATAH VE CHOL HA NOG'E'A BAH YITMA AD HA AREV

וְאִשָּׁה כִּי תִהְיֶה זָבָה דָּם יִהְיֶה זֹבָהּ בִּבְשָׂרָהּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים תִּהְיֶה בְנִדָּתָהּ וְכָל הַנֹּגֵעַ בָּהּ יִטְמָא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even.

BN: And if a woman has a discharge, and the discharge in her flesh includes blood, she shall be considered impure for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be considered unclean until the evening.


15:20 VE CHOL ASHER TISHKAV ALAV BE NIDATAH YITMA VE CHOL ASHER TESHEV ALAV YITMA

וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁכַּב עָלָיו בְּנִדָּתָהּ יִטְמָא וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר תֵּשֵׁב עָלָיו יִטְמָא

KJ: And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean.

BN: And anything that she lies on in her impurity shall be considered unclean; and anything that she sits on shall be considered unclean.


15:21 VE CHOL HA NOG'E'A BE MISHKAVAH YECHABES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

15:23 VE IM AL HA MISHKAV HU O AL HE KELI ASHER HI YOSHEVET ALAV BE NAG'O VO YITMA AD HA AREV

וְאִם עַל הַמִּשְׁכָּב הוּא אוֹ עַל הַכְּלִי אֲשֶׁר הִוא יֹשֶׁבֶת עָלָיו בְּנָגְעוֹ בוֹ יִטְמָא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even.

BN: And if it is on the bed, or on anything that she has used for a seat, when he touches it, he shall be considered unclean until the evening.


15:24 VE IM SHACHOV YISHKAV ISH OTAH U TEHI NIDATAH ALAV VE TAM'E SHIV'AT YAMIM VE CHAL HA MISHKAV ASHER YISHKAV ALAV YITMA

וְאִם שָׁכֹב יִשְׁכַּב אִישׁ אֹתָהּ וּתְהִי נִדָּתָהּ עָלָיו וְטָמֵא שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְכָל הַמִּשְׁכָּב אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכַּב עָלָיו יִטְמָא

KJ: And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean.

BN: And if any man lie with her, and her impurity be upon him, he shall be considered unclean for seven days; and every bed on which he has lain shall be considered unclean.


NIDATAH: FLOWERS?! What level of sexual embarrassment and medical pruriency must it require to translate this as "flowers"!

15:25 VE ISHAH KI YAZUV ZOV DAMAH YAMIM RABIM BE LO ET NIDATAH O CHI TAZUV AL NIDATAH KOL YEMEY ZOV TUM'ATAH KI YEMEY NIDATAH TIHEYEH TEM'E'AH HI

וְאִשָּׁה כִּי יָזוּב זוֹב דָּמָהּ יָמִים רַבִּים בְּלֹא עֶת נִדָּתָהּ אוֹ כִי תָזוּב עַל נִדָּתָהּ כָּל יְמֵי זוֹב טֻמְאָתָהּ כִּימֵי נִדָּתָהּ תִּהְיֶה טְמֵאָה הִוא

KJ: And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.

BN: And if a woman has a discharge of blood that lasts for several days, but not during the time of her menstruation, or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her menstruation, during all the days of the discharge she shall be considered unclean, as in the days of her menstruation: this renders her unclean.


15:26 KOL HA MISHKAV ASHER TISHKAV ALAV KOL YEMEY ZOVAH KE MISHKAV NIDATAH YIHEYEH LA VE CHOL HA KELI ASHER TESHEV ALAV TAM'E YIHEYEH KE TUM'AT NIDATAH

כָּל הַמִּשְׁכָּב אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁכַּב עָלָיו כָּל יְמֵי זוֹבָהּ כְּמִשְׁכַּב נִדָּתָהּ יִהְיֶה לָּהּ וְכָל הַכְּלִי אֲשֶׁר תֵּשֵׁב עָלָיו טָמֵא יִהְיֶה כְּטֻמְאַת נִדָּתָהּ

KJ: Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation.

BN: Every bed on which she lies through all the days of her discharge shall be treated the same as the bed of her menstruation; and anything on which she sits shall be considered unclean, as in the uncleanness of her menstruation.


15:27 VE CHOL HA NOG'E'A BAM YITMA VE CHIBES BEGADAV VE RACHATS BA MAYIM VE TAM'E AD HA AREV

וְכָל הַנּוֹגֵעַ בָּם יִטְמָא וְכִבֶּס בְּגָדָיו וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם וְטָמֵא עַד הָעָרֶב

KJ: And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.

BN: And whoever touches those things shall be considered unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be considered unclean until the evening.


15:28 VE IM TAHARAH MI ZOVAH VE SAPHRAH LAH SHIV'AT YAMIM VE ACHAR TIT'HAR

וְאִם טָהֲרָה מִזּוֹבָהּ וְסָפְרָה לָּהּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְאַחַר תִּטְהָר

KJ: But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean.

BN: But once she is cleansed of her discharge, then she shall count for herself seven days, and after that she shall be considered clean.


15:29 U VA YOM HA SHEMINI TIKACH LAH SHETEY TORIM O SHENEY BENEY YONAH VE HEVIY'AH OTAM EL HA KOHEN EL PETACH OHEL MO'ED

וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי תִּקַּח לָהּ שְׁתֵּי תֹרִים אוֹ שְׁנֵי בְּנֵי יוֹנָה וְהֵבִיאָה אוֹתָם אֶל הַכֹּהֵן אֶל פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד

KJ: And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

15:31 VE HIZARTEM ET BENEY YISRA-EL MI TUM'ATAM VE LO YAMUTU BE TUM'ATAM BE TAM'AM ET MISHKANI ASHER BETOCHAM

וְהִזַּרְתֶּם אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִטֻּמְאָתָם וְלֹא יָמֻתוּ בְּטֻמְאָתָם בְּטַמְּאָם אֶת מִשְׁכָּנִי אֲשֶׁר בְּתוֹכָם

KJ: Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.

BN: Thus shall you separate the Beney Yisra-El from their uncleanness; so that they do not die from their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is in their midst.


This statement poses an enormous question for post-Temple Judaism. The very clearly stated inference is that uncleanness refers specifically to the Mishkan and the Temple, that it is all about YHVH being impacted by the uncleanness and having to take the life of an impure person to avoid such impact; and that it therefore does not matter whether one is clean or unclean if there is no Temple to defile. Does a synagogue or Torah study house stand as substitute for the Temple, and therefore the TUM'AH continues? The Talmud would say yes, but this verse challenges that.


15:32 ZOT TORAT HA ZAV VA ASHER TETS'E MIMENU SHICHVAT ZERA LE TAM'AH VAH

זֹאת תּוֹרַת הַזָּב וַאֲשֶׁר תֵּצֵא מִמֶּנּוּ שִׁכְבַת זֶרַע לְטָמְאָה בָהּ

KJ: This is the law of him that hath an issue, and of him whose seed goeth from him, and is defiled therewith;

BN: This is the law for he who has a discharge, and for he from whom there is an emission of seed, so that he is unclean thereby.


15:33 VE HA DAVAH BE NIDATAH VE HA ZAV ET ZOVO LA ZACHAR VE LA NEKEVAH U LE ISH ASHER YISHKAV IM TEM'E'AH

וְהַדָּוָה בְּנִדָּתָהּ וְהַזָּב אֶת זוֹבוֹ לַזָּכָר וְלַנְּקֵבָה וּלְאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁכַּב עִם טְמֵאָה

KJ: And of her that is sick of her flowers, and of him that hath an issue, of the man, and of the woman, and of him that lieth with her that is unclean.

BN: And for she who is sick from her menstruation, and for those who have a discharge, whether it be a man, or a woman; and for he who lies with her that is unclean.
